As Tom’s Hardware reports (https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/external-ssds/redditor-buys-suspicious-drives-on-ebay-just-to-report-the-scamming-sellers-if-they-get-a-fake-ssd-or-hdd-latest-16tb-find-has-weights-and-microsd-card-hot-glued-inside-the-enclosure-to-make-it-feel-legit), a Reddit user named u/Hartkralle has developed an unusual method to expose fraud involving fake SSDs and hard drives on the sales platform eBay. He buys suspicious drives advertised with unrealistically high storage capacities to then verify their authenticity and report fraudulent sellers.
Approach Against Fake Storage Drives
The user reports that many products offered as external SSDs or HDDs are in fact not real storage drives. Instead, they often contain only microSD cards glued inside the enclosure, as well as weights to make the device feel credible when handled. A particularly striking example was an alleged 16TB drive that turned out to be completely fake upon closer inspection.
By reporting these sellers to eBay, u/Hartkralle has already been able to stop several fraud attempts. In such cases, eBay refunds the buyers and blocks the fraudulent accounts. Although scammers often create new profiles, this action at least delays sales to further unsuspecting customers.
Why This Scam Is So Dangerous
Fake storage drives can cause not only financial damage to buyers but also data loss. Users who fall for the seemingly cheap offers risk losing important data on non-existent or extremely unstable storage. Moreover, such fraud cases pose a serious problem for online commerce as they undermine trust in platforms like eBay.
