Research Findings and Application
The study was presented at an international scientific conference in Florence. The team examined the effect of locally grown catnip (Nepeta cataria), whose essential oils are known to repel insects. The lotion, made from the leaves of the plant, showed a significant reduction in mosquito bites among test subjects during field trials.
Compared to DEET, the most commonly used chemical active ingredient against mosquitoes so far, the catnip lotion offers several advantages: it is biodegradable, causes no skin irritation, and can be produced by the communities themselves, reducing dependence on expensive imports.
Importance for Malaria Control
Malaria remains one of the greatest health threats in many parts of Africa. The increasing resistance of the parasite to medications complicates treatment. Therefore, prevention through effective mosquito protection is crucial. The new lotion could help reduce the number of infections by decreasing contact with the transmitting insects.
Sustainability and Local Economy
Another positive aspect is the promotion of local agriculture and economy. Since catnip grows well in Uganda, village communities can cultivate and process the plants themselves. This creates jobs and strengthens self-sufficiency, which is especially important in remote areas.
Outlook
The researchers plan to further optimize the production of the lotion and increase acceptance within the communities. Additionally, further studies are intended to investigate the long-term effects and possible areas of application. The combination of traditional knowledge and modern science demonstrates how sustainable solutions for global health problems can emerge.
