As Tagesschau Wirtschaft reports (https://www.tagesschau.de/wirtschaft/energie/ki-rechenzentren-abwaerme-100.html), large AI data centers generate significant amounts of waste heat, which so far is only used as an energy source to about ten percent. In view of the current energy shortage and rising costs, this unused heat represents an important resource that has hardly been tapped in the economy so far.
Waste Heat as an Underestimated Resource
Data centers, especially those specialized in Artificial Intelligence (AI), require enormous computing power and thus a lot of energy. Inevitably, waste heat is generated, which is often discharged via cooling systems. However, this heat is mostly released unused into the environment. Experts estimate that only around ten percent of the waste heat is actually recovered and reused – for example, for heating buildings or feeding into district heating networks.
Why Is Waste Heat Barely Used?
The reasons for the low utilization of waste heat are diverse. On the one hand, the technical prerequisites and investments to efficiently capture and transfer the heat are often lacking. On the other hand, many data centers are not located in close proximity to potential consumers, which makes transporting the heat difficult and economically unattractive. Additionally, regulatory and organizational hurdles must be overcome to integrate waste heat as an energy source into existing supply systems.
Economic and Ecological Opportunities
The use of waste heat from data centers offers both economic and ecological advantages. Companies could reduce their energy costs by recovering heat and at the same time contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. In times of rising energy prices and tightened climate targets, the efficient use of all available energy sources is gaining importance.
